Does Your Child Sing About Green Food

Printer Friendly Graphic The Mayo Clinic website recently warned that,"over the past 30 years, the rate of obesity in the United States has more than doubled for preschoolers and adolescents, and it has more than tripled for children ages 6 to 11."

So how do parents cope with the need to get their children to eat more healthy foods, primarily vegetables Could it be as simple as listening to healthy music

As a parent, a Grammy submitted musician, and a pre-school music educator, Miss Amy knows. Her song entitled "Green Food" on her debut CD, "Underwater," is fun for kids and delivers a mix of healthy choices. Here you can sample 12 green veggies in under 3 minutes.

This Dixieland ditty might just inspire your next family shopping journey through the fresh food isle. Parents have commented to Miss Amy that playing the song at dinner time has provided the opportunity to introduce avocados, green beans, broccoli and okra to the dinner plate. The song's fun and friendly references to these sometimes fearsome foods has broken down barriers for otherwise picky eaters, so enthusiastic parents have said.

The empowerment this music seems to provide for children to relate to otherwise unfamiliar vegetables could help to reinforce healthy eating at an early age.

So what healthy music are your kids listening to

Miss Amy also has a few non-musical ideas you can try at home: 1) present a handful of frozen peas to your child at dinner and exclaim, "Tonight, just for you, Popsicle Peas!" 2) read Eric Carslyle's classic story, "The Hungry Caterpillar," over a snack of raw baby spinach leaves. 3) write your child's name on a banana with permanent marker, hide it in plain sight and tell him there's a treat in the kitchen with his name on it.

For more information about childhood obesity talk to your family pediatrician. You can visit Miss Amy's website at www.MissAmyKids.com.
